The researchers from Oakland University have managed to develop a drone which can not only fly. It can also move on and under water surface.
In the air it behaves the same way as ordinary drones. However, you can see the difference right after landing on water surface where Loon Copter swims without any difficulty. Wanna see what’s under the water surface? No problem. The drone fills up its ballast tank with water and turns around 90° which saves a lot of energy. When returning back up, the ballast tanks release the water and the drone automatically swims up on the surface where it can easily take off.
Due to physics, the project still has a lot of limitations. As it’s known, the water isn’t ideal for signal propagation so, for now, Loon Copter is only controllable when it’s not so deep. Although, a water friendly acoustic modem might be the solution.
